The concerns cited in this news story arose after a person in the United States contracted bird flu from a cow, thus indicating that the virus has developed increased transmission capabilities. While a single case isn’t indicative of an imminent pandemic, the spread of the disease among various species of animals appears to be growing. Millions of wild birds and poultry have died from it in recent years, with cats, bears, foxes, mink, and sea lions also now affected.

Although there’s currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission, experts fear the bird flu virus could evolve and, with a mortality rate believed to be as high as 60 percent, pose a significant threat to humans.

Readers with good memories will recall that we have been here before, however. Responding to a previous bird flu scare in 2006, Dr. Rath described in the New York Times how, with pharmaceutical drugs offering limited options for fighting a global pandemic, vitamins, minerals, plant polyphenols, and other nutrients present effective, safe, and affordable alternatives. Studies conducted at the Dr. Rath Research Institute have shown how nutrients can strengthen the immune system and affect all stages of an influenza infection.
